CHICAGO » Sen. Barack Obama, speaking to a gathering of minority journalists yesterday, stopped short of endorsing an official U.S. apology to American Indians but said the country should acknowledge its history of poor treatment of certain ethnic groups.
“There’s no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country, we’ve got some very sad and difficult things to account for,” Obama told hundreds of attendees of UNITY ’08, a convention of four minority journalism associations.
…
“I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said.
“I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it’s Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”
The possible next president of the United States just endorsed reparations? He just came out in support of the idea that special benefits (deeds) should be granted to certain groups based on the color of their skin? That I, a “typical white person” who has never oppressed an Indian and never owned a slave, whose great-grandparents never did those things, should be on the hook for federal “deeds” aka “money” for someone whose great-grandparents weren’t oppressed and weren’t slaves? He would put recent immigrants to this country on the hook for those costs, too, including African immigrants? The possible next president of the United States wants to feed the anger and sense of entitlement and appeal to the worst kinds of class and race envy? This is his idea of “change?” Is “hope” really just the hope that the government will cut members of your race a check? This is the guy who claims to be the one who will “bring the country together?”
Won’t this idea divide the country even more? Will gifting a bunch of unearned money to people for no reason other than the color of their skin make things better for the country, or will it make it worse? Will hearts change? Will behaviors change?
When Obama walked on stage at the McCormick Center, many journalists in the audience leapt to their feet and applauded enthusiastically after being told not to do so.
…
Obama, who acknowledged that he needed a nap, stood up to say farewell to the audience of journalists, many of whom gave him another standing ovation.
Don’t expect the slavish, sycophantic news media in this country to stand up and oppose anything this guy says or does anymore. These are supposed to be our god damned JOURNALISTS, not his fan club. There is clearly no more pretense of objectivity here. These people are brazenly open about their support for one side in this election. It’s time to start getting creeped out by this stuff.
