If you like your current coverage, you can keep it. Maybe
Some surprising almost-candor from the Obama administration:
According to the Associated Press, “White House officials suggest the president’s rhetoric shouldn’t be taken literally: What Obama really means is that government isn’t about to barge in and force people to change insurance.”
Depending on how the public plan is designed in Congress, millions of Americans would lose their existing coverage. By opening the public plan to all employees and using Medicare rates, the Lewin Group, a nationally prominent econometrics firm, has said that the public plan could result in 119.1 million Americans being transitioned out of private coverage, including employer based coverage, into a public plan.
Well, that’s sweet. Just this week he was calling conservatives “naysayers” and “fearmongers” for suggesting that he was trying to implement socialized medicine:
What are not legitimate concerns are those being put forward claiming a public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system. I’ll be honest. There are countries where a single-payer system may be working. But I believe – and I’ve even taken some flak from members of my own party for this belief – that it is important for us to build on our traditions here in the United States. So, when you hear the naysayers claim that I’m trying to bring about government-run health care, know this – they are not telling the truth.
If it wasn’t for the fact that he IS trying to bring about government-run health care, then it would, in fact, be lying to claim that he’s trying to bring about government-run health care.
Expect a comment from Gibbsie soon with a further clarification, proclaiming that the president never said that he wants government-run health care, but that it’s likely that he just has no other choice.
