Independence Day!

Between the blood blisters from holding onto fireworks too long and indigestion from Aunt Petunia’s potato salad that’s been sitting out in the sun all day, take a few minutes to thank the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  These were a tiny group of men who pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to bring about independence for this country.

Some of them died in battle.  Some of them lost sons.  Some of them were captured and executed.  Some had their houses and property destroyed.  They understood that by signing that document, the most likely outcome was death at the hands of their government.

They also understood that theirs was a battle that would need to be continually fought as long as Americans desired freedom.  Today it’s a political battle.  A battle between starkly different different ideas.  Whatever you believe, take time today to understand the ideas that the signers were trying to communicate, and thank them for their passion, faith, and dedication.
